Downsizing for the Future: Furnishing Your Home for Today and Years to Come.

If you’ve been dreaming of buying a new home but find yourself unable to move for the next couple of years, it can feel like a strange limbo.  Perhaps your youngest child is still in high school, or life circumstances (aging parents?) have tethered you to your current home longer than you’d prefer.

Trust me, twenty years of looking at the same furniture and interior design can psychologically affect your mood.  You may not be able to move yet,  but you can start transforming your living spaces now, giving yourself the emotional uplift you need while dreaming of  your future home. This means more than just reorganizing what you have —it’s about improving how you feel in your current home, while making smart choices for your future home.

The key? Choose new furnishings that can adapt to both your current life and the home you’ll transition to later.

Here are five (proven) recommendations that will refresh both your space and your spirit.

  1. A new rug can breathe life into any new space.  Worried whether a large rug will fit in a smaller space?  Choose one with a geometric pattern that we can help you customize (aka cut down) to accommodate your new space. The rug pictured is the perfect example of how by removing a few rows of “boxes”, your new rug can move with you!
  2.  A sectional.  We designed this aforementioned client’s family room four years ago.  Each piece of the sectional can stand on its own, creating a new arrangement of furnishings.
  3. Want to update your dining room but are afraid to commit?  A circular table with multiple leaves transforms into a large oval dining table that will travel with you in any new space.  Remove a few leaves and this table goes from 112” long to just 40” round.

4. This  french antique rolling cart was custom created for the same client as mentioned above who wanted more counter space in their previous kitchen.  Now that they have downsized, it functions as a bar cart in their new townhome. Cocktails anyone?

5. A set of custom free standing bookcases were also moved from this client’s old location to their new townhome. Because they were built to accommodate 8′ ceilings, we knew that they would work in any new space.

Purchasing the right furnishings, knowing that they will move with you, can bring you joy until you are ready to commit to your next home.  Your home should uplift and inspire you, even in this transitional phase.  Allow us to help you let go of the emotional heaviness that your old furniture may be bringing and step into a future that feels lighter, brighter, and full of possibilities.
